Two Urban Synergy mentees on TheCityUK Work Experience programme in London
Two young people, Samuel and Tadakadzwa, recently completed a four-day work experience placement at TheCityUK as part of the Easter Work Experience programme. Their time at the organisation offered a unique insight into two very different but equally important areas of the business; corporate communications and executive operations.

“This work experience taught me the importance of multitasking and maintaining an active feedback loop, while also strengthening my interpersonal skills in a professional setting.” - Tadakadzwa

Exploring corporate communications at TheCityUK

Samuel joined the Corporate Communications team, where he was immersed in the fast-paced world of media, messaging, and digital engagement. Across the four days, he shadowed team members to understand how they manage communications across multiple platforms, from press releases to social media and large-scale events. He attended team meetings, gaining first-hand insight into how campaigns are planned and executed, and supported research into digital communications. Through this experience, Samuel developed a deeper understanding of how organisations communicate their work, influence audiences, and maintain a strong public presence.

A behind-the-scenes look at executive operations in the CEO office

Meanwhile, Tadakadzwa took on a role within the CEO Office as an Executive Assistant placement, giving him a valuable bird’s-eye view of how the organisation operates at the highest level. Working at the heart of TheCityUK, he supported a range of key functions, including briefing preparation, organisational planning, and project administration. He also gained exposure to operational support and events coordination, seeing how different parts of the business connect and align with strategic priorities. His role highlighted the importance of organisation, adaptability, and attention to detail in supporting senior leadership.

“Tada was the student I oversaw. Feedback from all over the organisation was glowing. He was passionate about the work he undertook, eager to learn and had a great work ethic.” - Oliver, Business Manager

Together, their experiences showcased the breadth of opportunities available within the financial and professional services industry, beyond traditional roles often associated with the sector. From shaping communications strategies to supporting executive decision-making, both students gained practical skills and valuable exposure to the working world.
