Courtenay was more than a legal powerhouse; he was a man of immense compassion, vision, and commitment. His passion for justice wasn’t limited to the courtroom. He often said he wanted to meet young people before he saw them in court — before it was too late. That powerful intention shaped so much of what Urban Synergy stands for today.
When we first started Urban Synergy, Courtenay was one of the earliest to believe in our mission. As Chair of Trustees, he steered our vision with wisdom and conviction. His presence — commanding, thoughtful, and always inspiring — brought gravitas and credibility, but more importantly, heart. Whether addressing a room full of professionals or listening intently to a young person share their dreams, Courtenay made everyone feel seen and heard.
Karen, an alumni mentee featured in the picture above contacted us with condolences to say:
I know how much of an impact Courtenay had on Urban Synergy and many more. I will never forget when he let me wear his Silk wig and gown, it was truly a defining moment for me. It really meant a lot to me that he was willing to share - it gave me fresh hope for the future. I have done the bar now, it’s a real seed that was planted on that day - I’m scheduled to be called to the bar this year.
We pay tribute to the fact that he lent more than his name — he gave his time, his stories, and his belief that all young people, regardless of background, deserve a chance to thrive. He mentored with patience, spoke with purpose, and encouraged our community to rise beyond limitations. He stood as proof of what was possible.
Courtenay’s passing leaves a deep void, but also a powerful legacy. At Urban Synergy, we will continue his work — inspiring, guiding, and walking alongside the next generation so they are never defined by the courtroom, but by their potential.
Rest in power, Courtenay. Thank you for everything.
With deepest respect and love,
Leila Thomas
