The Urban Synergy Life Skills Enrichment Programme got off to a sunny start in June with students from Deptford Green School who attended a pre-programme set of development activities before the official start of the programme from July-August.
Rules Workshop and Goal Setting
The summer activities are an integral part of the Urban Synergy 1-2-1 mentoring programme where the main objectives are to increase mentees’ self-confidence, improve their academic performance and raise their aspirations whist engaging in fun, educational and safe activities.

Metro Design Consultancy
‘Meet the Role Models’ – Mr Daniel Taylor and employees from Metro Design Consultancy shares information on architecture and interior design with students. Mentees learned about the wide range of opportunities in corporate design projects, enjoyed a tour of the office and got to see design being developed.

The full mentee cohort for 2016 joined the Deptford Green students for a Country Walk at Barton Springs care of Oasis Adventures.

First Aid Workshop
First Aid Workshop with Certificate care of Norman Abbott of the London Ambulance Service. Mentees practised CPR and earned a certificate in basic first aid
Volunteering at Pineapple Club, Anerley
Mentees took part in Intergenerational volunteering with the Pineapple Club in Anerley, London. Giving young people a chance to connect with the older generation and vice versa!
Ernst & Young visit
We were invited to the London Bridge Offices hosted by Michael Adesite of Ernst & Young. Mentees learned about EY’s business and the opportunities for young people with the EY Foundation as well as hearing from inspirational Role Models and preparing short presentations.
CV and Careers workshop
Urban Synergy developed a CV writing and careers workshop with CEB Technology. Mentees were given 1-2-1 advice on improving their CVs, workshops on brand marketing and effective use of social media plus a talk from celebrity cake maker Elizabeth Solaru.
BBC 1xtra Visit
As part of the 1Million Hours initiative to get people to volunteer, Urban Synergy mentees were given a tour of BBC Radio 1 Xtra at Broadcasting House, meeting producers, web designers, researchers and presenters. One highlight of the visit was meeting DJ/presenters Charlie Sloth and Yasmin Evans who answered questions from the excited mentees and gave insights into their jobs and what they enjoy most about their work.
