Speed mentoring for students at Deptford Green in South East London

Urban Synergy delivered a speed mentoring event for students at Deptford Green School, giving young people the chance to have short, focused career conversations with volunteers from a range of professional backgrounds. These sessions provided students with early access to mentors, insight into career pathways, workplace expectations, and the realities of different roles — knowledge and networks many students wouldn’t have access to.

By connecting young people with mentors from various industries, speed mentoring reflects research-backed principles of effective mentoring: intentional, structured interactions and exposure to multiple perspectives to maximize learning, confidence, and career readiness — even at a young age.

This session was made possible thanks to the support of the Deptford Challenge Trust (DCT) and the London Community Foundation, whose funding ensures initiatives like this reaches the young people who will benefit most.

Through exposure to mentors, practical advice, and career insights, initiatives like this empowers young people, broadens their horizons, and turns challenges into opportunities.
