Speed mentoring 180 year 11 students at Deptford Green school in South East London
What does it take to help young people feel confident about their future? Sometimes, it starts with a single conversation. At Deptford Green School, 180 Year 11 students took part in a speed mentoring experience that gave them access to real-world professionals, practical advice, and the belief that their ambitions are achievable.

"It was very delightful meeting everyone and seeing how life has been at work and what they’ve done in the past to be successful.” – Student

Urban Synergy had the pleasure of hosting a Speed Mentoring session for the Year 11 students at Deptford Green School, engaging up to 180 students in a day full of inspiration, guidance, and practical career advice.

The day began with an assembly, where the entire year group was introduced to the speed mentoring programme. During the session, students learned what to expect from the day, the purpose of speed mentoring, and some helpful dos and don’ts to make the most of their time with the mentors.

After the assembly, students took part in speed mentoring sessions, rotating through a series of conversations with mentors from various industries. This gave them the opportunity to ask questions, gain insights into different career paths, and understand the skills and experiences needed to succeed in the workplace.

The feedback from both students and mentors was overwhelmingly positive. Students left the session feeling motivated, empowered, and more confident about their future choices, while mentors enjoyed the chance to share their knowledge and guide young people through these pivotal career decisions.

"A well organised event with enthusiastic professionals who listened to students and told their professional journeys with humour and realism. The school and Urban Synergy seem to share the same values and the relationship between both was clear to see. The wide range of professionals and the diversity of the mentors was positive and great for the students to see what is possible for their future.” – Volunteer

We are grateful to Celine Nembhard for coordinating the day and to all the mentors who gave their time and expertise to support the students.

By joining Urban Synergy as a mentor, you can share your experience, offer practical career insight, and help young people build confidence in their future. Just one conversation can open doors, shift mindsets, and inspire lasting change. If you’re passionate about supporting the next generation, we’d love to have you involved.
