Before you came into contact with Urban Synergy, what were your career aspirations?
My dad had a degree in computer science and worked as a systems analyst, so I always wanted to be like him. I’ve always loved computer games and technology, so following in his footsteps just felt natural to me.
How did Leila help you on your journey?
I think it was during my second Urban Synergy event that I met Leila again. I mentioned that I’d been to one of their events before, and she connected with me on LinkedIn. Since then, I’ve attended many more Urban Synergy events, connecting with companies like Salesforce and Morningstar.
Those experiences have been amazing! They’ve allowed me to network with professionals across tech and other industries, and to really see how many different roles exist within a workplace. It gave me a broader understanding of what’s out there beyond what I originally imagined.
You visited Thomson Reuters when you were eleven. What was that experience like?
It was very unusual for me at the time because I’d never been in a corporate setting before. I hadn’t been into the city much either, so seeing people in suits, walking into offices, it was all new to me. But it was such a brilliant experience. It really opened my eyes to what professional life looks like.
What are you doing now?
I’m currently at university studying Digital Media and Computer Science, so I’m doing what I love! It’s definitely challenging at times, especially those 9 a.m. two-hour lectures, but I know it’s worth it. I’m also doing a placement year, which is giving me great hands-on experience.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about becoming a mentee with Urban Synergy?
I’d say go for it, even if it feels a bit out of your comfort zone. It might be something you’ve never done before, but it can open so many doors for your future. It gives you confidence, helps you connect with people who can guide you, and really sets you on the path toward that dream job.
