Maxine was an Urban Synergy mentee while at school, here she shares her journey to freelance writing with us. Now 29 years old and an alumni, she reflects on how her journalist mentor Cynthia helped her find a career to thrive in.

How old were you when you started Urban Synergy, what year did you join?

Around 15 years old. I heard about Urban Synergy through my secondary school as they were coming in to do events and also looking for 121 mentees. One of my teachers suggested I join the programme for 121 mentoring.

What was life like before Urban Synergy? Did you know what career you aspired to be in?

Before Urban Synergy, I knew I wanted to be a writer, but I wasn’t clear about the various careers that talent could take me in, other than being an author.

How did your mentor, Cynthia, help you in your journey?

Cynthia was the first person to introduce me to Journalism. A journalist herself, she shared with me what her job entailed at Pride Magazine at the time. Through doing this, I became increasingly interested in the career path. Through Cynthia’s connections, she helped land me my first work experience placement at The Voice Newspaper. Working in a newsroom like this and having my article published in the newspaper was a clear confirmation that I wanted to pursue a career in journalism. Once I knew I wanted to be a journalist, it then helped me understand which subjects to choose at college and subsequently at university. Cynthia also helped me with my confidence, not just in writing but in life, too, and informal life skills when it comes to communication.

Were there any other Urban Synergy events that helped you in your journey?

Urban Synergy opened my eyes to the world of possibilities in the world of work. From speed mentoring, where you get the opportunity to speak to mentors in different fields, to entering workspaces like Thomson Reuters to see people working in action, that representation really helps, especially when coming from a background that isn’t privy to such environments. It helps give you an extra boost of ambition so that by the time I was at university, I already knew how to be proactive with seeking out opportunities that would help my career.

What are you doing now career-wise?

I am a freelance writer and have been for the past 7 years. This includes journalism, copywriting, SEO and more. I’m able to use my journalism skills in various areas.

What advice would you give to someone considering mentoring with Urban Synergy?

Definitely do it and take advantage of the opportunities that come your way. The more you are around people who have walked the path before you, the more you can learn, which can consequently help guide your steps going forward into your career.
