Garry Green KC is a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers promoting social mobility
Garry Green KC, a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers is one of Urban Synergy’s earliest supporters. Being a Role Model and mentoring isn’t just about career advice, it’s about transformation and promoting social mobility. Drawing from his own school experiences and work in the criminal justice system, he’s committed to showing young people what’s truly possible when they see professionals who look like them succeeding.

How did you find out about Urban Synergy, and what motivated you to get involved?

I was there right at the very start as Leila is a friend of mine. I got involved with Urban Synergy because I know how important it is for young people to see others achieving their goals.

From my own experience at school, I wasn’t particularly inspired or motivated when it came to thinking about a professional career. That experience has motivated me to make sure that others are inspired and encouraged to see what’s possible for them.

Working within the criminal justice system, I’ve seen far too many bright and capable young people who, if they had been supported or motivated at the right time, could have achieved so much more. That’s a huge part of why I wanted to be involved, to help make sure that inspiration and guidance reach them before it’s too late.

What’s your goal when mentoring a young person?

My goal is to help young people realise their potential and to help them identify someone who’s already walking the career path they aspire to follow.

Even when young people are focused and ambitious, they don’t always see Black professionals like myself in those positions. So it’s important for them to meet us, see us, and recognise that we share their cultural background. That visibility matters. It helps them see that they can achieve the same goals and that their ambitions are valid and possible.

What kind of feedback have you received from mentees?

I’ve kept in touch with some of my older mentees, and I’ve seen them progress in their careers with real confidence knowing that they can succeed. It’s incredibly rewarding to help young people develop that sense of self-belief, determination, and self-esteem just by showing them an example they can relate to.

I’ve also taken some young men with me to the Old Bailey to observe trials I’ve been involved in. Watching the process firsthand gives them a deeper understanding and often strengthens their motivation. They might have an idea of what they want to do, but seeing it in action brings it to life and inspires them even more.

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a mentor with Urban Synergy?

I would say do it. You’ll be surprised by how inspiring it is for you as well. Mentoring isn’t just rewarding for the young person, it’s equally inspiring and fulfilling for the mentor. Seeing that impact firsthand gives you a real sense of purpose.
