Tobi, Business Development Representative EMEA at Morningstar shares his experience volunteering with Urban Synergy, reflecting on how spending the day mentoring Year 9 students helped inspire confidence, spark curiosity, and show young people the real possibilities that lie ahead in their education and careers.
What did your day volunteering with Urban Synergy look like?
I volunteered at Addey and Stanhope School in New Cross, South East London, supporting an Urban Synergy speed‑career mentoring session with Year 9 students. Alongside volunteers from organisations including Google and others working in finance and engineering, I spoke with small groups of students in a series of rotating conversations.
We introduced ourselves, shared our career journeys, and answered their questions about education and work. I also spent time asking them about their interests, ambitions, and the subjects they were considering for GCSEs. The aim was to help them think more positively and confidently about the choices they’re about to make.
What motivated you to get involved in the session?
I got involved because I wanted to give back and support young people who are beginning to make important decisions about their education and future careers. I remember choosing my GCSE options without having access to professionals who could share their experiences, so I wanted to offer the kind of guidance and perspective I wish I’d had. I also heard Ange had a great experience volunteering with Urban Synergy and wanted to see what it’s like!
What impact do you think you had on the young people you met?
I think my involvement helped make their future feel more tangible and achievable. Rather than just describing my role, I used storytelling and real‑life examples from my education and career to show how different experiences and skills can lead to opportunities over time.
I also asked them questions about their interests, what they enjoy studying, and what they imagine what they will do in the future. Those conversations encouraged them to think about their options and, hopefully, approach their next steps with more clarity and confidence.
Did the experience help you develop any new skills or perspectives?
Yes, it definitely helped me develop my communication and mentoring skills. I needed to break down my career journey into simple, understandable terms and use stories, examples, and questions to keep the students engaged. It was a great exercise to practice translating professional experiences into something relatable and meaningful for a younger audience.
What stood out to you most about the young people you spoke to?
I was reminded of just how big young people can dream at that age. The students were curious, open‑minded, and eager to explore different opportunities. Their ambition and enthusiasm were genuinely inspiring, and it reinforced for me how important it is that young people receive positive encouragement and practical guidance as they start thinking about their futures.
What would you tell someone thinking about mentoring with Urban Synergy?
I would encourage everyone to get involved. It’s a great opportunity to step outside of your usual work environment and have meaningful conversations with young people. Even if you only inspire one student or help them think differently about their future, it’s incredibly rewarding.
