Did you know there are jobs out there you've never even heard of? That's exactly what 120 Prendergast School Year 9 students learned during a career discovery day at our recent Speed Mentoring event.
What is Career Speed Mentoring?
The event aimed to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace, providing students with a chance to meet professionals from various industries and gain valuable career insights. The format was simple yet effective: short, focused conversations, where students could ask questions, learn about different career paths, and hear real-world experiences.
We encouraged the students to ask questions about our volunteer’s career journeys, challenges faced, and how they overcame them.
What can students learn from speed mentors?
- Career Pathways: Sharing different routes to success and highlighting that there isn't just one path to follow.
- Skills and Experience: Emphasising the importance of soft skills like communication, organization, and time management, in addition to academic qualifications.
- Overcoming Challenges: Discussing the difficulties and setbacks speed mentors faced and how resilience played a crucial role in career growth.
- Networking: Encouraging students to build connections and learn from others' experiences.
Our thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help the students with career exploration.
