Urban Synergy recently hosted a speed mentoring event at Addey & Stanhope School, providing 240 students aged 14-16 with invaluable career insights.

The event featured a diverse range of career role models from leading organisations such as UK Power Networks, BlackRock, Bloomberg, Lloyds Banking Group, Accenture, M&G Investments, and the Crown Prosecution Service. Students had the opportunity to engage with professionals in various fields, including Data Science, Immunology, Customer Success, and Project Management.

During the speed mentoring sessions, students gained valuable insights into different career paths, the skills required for specific roles, and the relevant qualifications needed to succeed. This information was particularly beneficial for Year 10 students who are starting to explore work experience placements, and Year 11 students who are seeking both work experience and part-time employment opportunities.

The speed mentoring format allowed students to interact with multiple professionals in a short amount of time, maximising their exposure to different career options and perspectives. The event was a huge success, leaving students inspired and equipped with valuable knowledge to navigate their future career choices.

The Power of Speed Mentoring

Speed mentoring sessions typically involve students rotating through tables, spending 6-8 minutes with each mentor. This rapid-fire format allows for maximum exposure to diverse industries and professions. The mentors, acting as role models, share their career journeys, job responsibilities, and educational experiences. The goal is to inspire and empower students, broaden their career horizons, and help them understand the range of opportunities available.

Benefits of Speed Mentoring for Students

Speed mentoring offers numerous benefits for students. It can:

  • Broaden career horizons by exposing students to a variety of career paths, including those in STEM fields.
  • Provide insights into different job roles and the skills required for them.
  • Help students understand that success can take many forms and that there is no single path to a fulfilling career.
  • Develop networking and communication skills through interaction with professionals.
  • Boost confidence and motivation by connecting with relatable role models.
