Heidi Alexander MP and Urban Synergy hosted a thank you reception on Thursday 31st March 2011. The thank you reception was for all of the role models, academic role models, mentors, Urban Synergy supporters and key Urban Synergy members who have contributed to helping Urban Synergy to thrive and continue to grow and also to gather feedback and suggestions on how we can improve.
The event was held in the illustrious and historical House of Commons. The guests enjoyed a wine and drinks reception, music and canapes in the Terrace Marquee with a picturesque view over the River Thames. Heidi Alexander, MP for Lewisham East, opened the event and also mentioned that this was the first event that she had hosted at the House of Commons since becoming an MP in 2010. Leila Thomas, Founder of Urban Synergy, presided over the event and showed a short film about Urban Synergy which featured mentees, mentors, parents and school heads talking about the Urban Synergy programme. Jackie Bygrave, Deputy Head at Deptford Green School in South London spoke about the school’s involvement with Urban Synergy. Leila talked about Urban Synergy’s registered charity status and achieving (APS) Approved Provider Standard accreditation via the Mentoring and Befriending organisation. Leila then invited a poet, Sharnika Power (Neeki Poetry) to perform. It was a performance that electrified the audience.
There were also some ex-mentees, now Urban Synergy Young Ambassadors, in attendance who also mingled with guests.
Many of the guests commented that it was a wonderful, inspiring evening. We would like to thank Heidi Alexander MP for hosting the evening and all of the House of Commons staff.
